In 1930 werd het Begijnhofmuseum opgericht door de conservator Daniel Van Damme, gevolgd door het Erasmushuis in 1932. De collecties werden hoofdzakelijk door hem en diens opvolger Jean-Pierre Vanden Branden bijeengebracht. De collecties van het Begijnhof geven een beeld van het religieuze en het dagelijkse leven van de begijnen alsook van het dorpse leven in Anderlecht aan het eind van de 19de eeuw.
\nDe collecties van het Erasmushuis bestaan uit geschriften van Erasmus en geven een beeld van zijn tijd aan de hand van kunstwerken, meubelstukken en beedhouwwerken uit de 16de eeuw.<\/p>\n

De collecties van het Begijnhof draaien om twee polen: enerzijds het religieuze leven en anderzijds de geschiedenis van en het dagelijkse leven in Anderlecht vanaf de Merovingische periode tot aan de industri\u00eble revolutie.<\/p>\n

Voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog had een aanzienlijk deel van de joodse bevolking van Brussel zich in Anderlecht gevestigd. Daniel Van Damme (1893 -1967), conservator-oprichter van het Erasmushuis, besloot bij de oprichting van het museum een speciale plaats in te ruimen voor de joodse geschiedenis en cultuur.<\/p>\n
