Vanwege zijn houding ten aanzien van de Kerk als instituut haalde Erasmus zich felle kritiek op de hals van de traditionele theologen. Zijn boeken en zijn denkbeelden hebben de protestantse Reformatie in de hand gewerkt, waarbij hij de persoonlijke geloofsovertuiging en het effectief naleven van de evangelische waarden voorop stelde.
\nToch werd Erasmus nooit protestants en hij overleed binnen de rooms-katholieke Kerk.<\/p>\n

Als Humanist was Erasmus ervan overtuigd dat men andermans denkbeelden nooit zomaar mag veroordelen, aangezien de menselijke aangelegenheden immers van nature ambigu zijn. Dit bracht hem ertoe een mensbeeld te ontwikkelen dat niet louter wordt bepaald door diens geloofsovertuiging en dat uitgaat van de vrije wil.<\/p>\n

Hij definieerde zichzelf als een wereldburger, niet gebonden aan een bepaalde plek, maar thuis in de contreien waar de cultuur en het humanisme floreerden. De twee enige gemeenschappen waarop hij zich liet voorstaan waren de \u2018Republiek der Letteren\u2019 (op te vatten als een virtueel territorium, waarbinnen geletterden en geleerden uit alle windstreken elkaar in vriendschap kunnen ontmoeten) \u2013 in dit opzicht was hij Europees! \u2013 en de christelijke Kerk.<\/p>\n
