The “weeds” you can see in the gardens of the Erasmus House might be more useful than you think… That certainly goes for the dye plant used to colour fabrics and wool throughout the Renaissance period. With two experts to guide you, you can immerse yourself in the art of plant dyeing and learn how to spin a local wool – produced by the black sheep living in Schaerbeek\/Schaarbeek – just like our ancestors did.<\/p>\n

Maybe sitting on the \u2018cocoon\u2019 bench in the Philosophical Garden of the Erasmus House, surrounded by nature, and drawing to your heart\u2019s content sounds like a dream come true. Well, that is exactly what Serge Goldwicht would like you to see him doing for this live drawing show! Come and watch as he produces original artworks at a rate of one every three minutes, committing them to paper with just a pen, Indian ink and natural pigments. The drawings will be displayed as they are completed, and if you like, you can take one home \u2013 all for the price of little more than a brief chat with the artist! The Renaissance-inspired Garden of Medicinal Plants laid out by Ren\u00e9 Pech\u00e8re in the house\u2019s courtyard is a reminder of the great humanist\u2019s time in Brussels. Beyond this walled garden lies the Philosophical Garden, designed by landscape architect Beno\u00eet Fondu. Each of its leaf-shaped flowerbeds provides a botanical \u2018snapshot\u2019 of the various natural environments encountered by Erasmus on his travels, while works by four contemporary artists (Catherine Beaugrand, Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Perejaume and Bob Verschueren) further enhance the beauty of the setting. This series of ceramic works takes its name from the Renaissance genre of still-life painting \u2013 Vanitas \u2013 that referred to the Christian notions of the vanity of earthly possessions, the superfluousness of pleasures, and the fleetingness of life; a solemn reminder of the memento mori (\u201cremember that you will die\u201d) etched into the face of life\u2026And all that gives the artist and viewers justification for enjoying her representations of earthly objects, despite their futile nature.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n
